Q. Please can you introduce yourself and your company

I joined the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Tokyo, Japan, in 2005. Since 2011, I have been engaged in the research of high sensitivity image sensors in the Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL).

NHK is Japan’s public broadcaster which delivers wide range of programs, and conducts a research and development in STRL, such as 8K Super Hi-Vision.

Q. What will you be discussing at Image Sensors Europe?

In the presentation at Image Sensors Europe, I will introduce the importance of the development of the stacked image sensors with photoconversion films using avalanche multiplication in a film to improve the sensitivity of the image sensors. I will explain our developed highly absorptive thin-film crystalline selenium (c-Se)-stacked CMOS image sensors.

Q. What challenges do you see industry facing at the moment?

Recently, high definition imaging systems are highly required, such as 8K Super Hi-Vision cameras. However, because the sensitivity of the image sensors decreases with the shrinkage of the pixel size, it is difficult to make the cameras smaller. In order to meet the users demand, we are trying to develop high definition and high sensitivity image sensors.
