Julian is a Business Development Manager at Nanoco Technologies, a nanomaterials company specialising in the development and manufacture of colloidal quantum dots. He holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from City University of Hong Kong, where his research focused on the synthesis and applications of colloidal nanomaterials. He joined Nanoco in 2018 as a Senior Materials Chemist, working on quantum dot materials for display technologies before working extensively on the development of quantum dots for image sensor applications, with particular emphasis on III–V quantum dots. In 2025, Julian moved into a commercial role, where he now focuses on identifying new opportunities and building partnerships at the intersection of advanced materials and imaging technologies.

1. This is the first year that your company will be on stage at Image Sensors Europe. Please tell us what motivated you to participate.

We participated last year for the first time with a booth and found the conference to be an excellent forum to engage with the wider image sensor community. The presentations and interactions provided valuable insights into our customer’s priorities and needs.  For this year’s event, we expect to learn more about SWIR, MWIR and other emerging opportunities, enabling us to develop relevant solutions in these domains.

2. You will be joining the panel discussion on Quantum Dot technology. What are you keen to emphasise regarding its promise for image sensing applications?

We are excited to participate in this year’s panel discussion to discuss the latest developments in the field and address some of the key challenges facing this emerging sensor technology. As with any new platform, wider adoption depends on overcoming technical, manufacturing and market barriers. While the ecosystem for QD CMOS continues to mature, we firmly believe that the combination of strong sensor performance, compact form factors and scalable manufacturing offers a compelling solution for emerging consumer electronics and automotive applications.

3. What sessions are you looking forward to hearing at ISE in its 20th year?

Perhaps without too much surprise, we are especially looking forward to Session 2 on technology breakthroughs – beyond RGB. Day 2 also brings further highlights for us with the application specific sessions. Beyond the talks, we are eager to see the latest updates and demonstrations on the exhibition floor, where we will once again showcase our technology, including a SWIR camera demo.

To hear more insights like these and engage directly with experts shaping the future of image sensors, be sure to join us at the event.
